For the past year, mobile and social have been the two areas brands most acknowledge a need to grow in. This should not come as a surprise since both of these areas have been showing continued growth at a rapid rate since 2007 (the year the iPhone launched and social media usage overtook email). For social, developments of the core technologies have slowed down, and growth in the field is now comprised of new services, business models, and an increase of scale. Social media strategy is increasingly about fine-tuning, and seems to be approaching the state SEO and SEM strategies are currently in. This is in sharp contrast to the state of mobile. Meanwhile, the core technologies behind mobile are transforming at a breakneck speed, specifically in the United States. The carrier business model is built around a two-year device refresh, so more than half of U.S. phone owners buy a new device each year. No other consumer electronic segment has even come close to this sort of speed for hardware replacement. The technologies behind mobile are also expanding beyond pocket-sized devices. The success of the iPad has made tablets a necessary consideration for digital marketing in 2011. This summer, Google TV will get an Android app marketplace. Apple already brought an App Store to OS X, and Google created one for Chrome. Motorola was quite savvy with the Atrix phone release in creating "laptop" and TV docks that allow the phone to power those experiences in addition to its core functionality. Mobile ...Read More »

Today we're announcing a new version of the Android platform — Android 2.3 (Gingerbread). It includes many new platform technologies and APIs to help developers create great apps. Some of the highlights include: Enhancements for game development: To improve overall responsiveness, we’ve added a new concurrent garbage collector and optimized the platform’s overall event handling. We’ve also given developers native access to more parts of the system by exposing a broad set of native APIs. From native code, applications can now access input and sensor events, EGL/OpenGL ES, OpenSL ES, and assets, as well a new framework for managing lifecycle and windows. For precise motion processing, developers can use several new sensor types, including gyroscope. Rich multimedia: To provide a great multimedia environment for games and other applications, we’ve added support for the new video formats VP8 and WebM, as well as support for AAC and AMR-wideband encoding. The platform also provides new audio effects such as reverb, equalization, headphone virtualization, and bass boost. New forms of communication: The platform now includes support for front-facing camera, SIP/VOIP, and Near Field Communications (NFC), to let developers include new capabilities in their applications. For a complete overview of what’s new in the platform, see the Android 2.3 Platform Highlights. Alongside the new platform, we are releasing updates to the SDK Tools (r8), NDK, and ADT Plugin for Eclipse (8.0.0). New features include: Simplified debug builds: Developers can easily generate debug packages without having to manually configure the application’s manifest, making workflow more efficient. Integrated ProGuard ...Read More »

Microsoft today is at long last set to show off Windows Phone 7, more than three years in the making. What is debuting is actually Microsoft's second crack at Windows Phone 7. The first was a more enterprise-focused device that was scrapped about a year and a half ago when Microsoft decided it needed a much more consumer-friendly approach in order to take on the iPhone and Google's Android. First shown at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona early this year, Windows Phone 7 is now finalized and will start showing up in devices that go on sale later this month in Europe and early next month in the U.S. (though it won't run on Sprint or Verizon until next year). Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, along with AT&T Mobility and Consumer President Ralph De La Vega, have scheduled a press conference for 6:30 a.m. PDT (9:30 a.m. EDT) today, which we will cover live in this post. (Click below to sign up for a reminder e-mail.) T-Mobile is also set to show its Windows Phone 7 lineup later today and we'll have plenty of coverage from both events. In the meantime, we have tons of Windows Phone 7 coverage, including our review of the Windows Phone technical preview, a video First Look from Bonnie Cha, our likes and gripes, as well as exclusive, behind-the-scenes ...Read More »

Rethinking "websites"; Rule 1 Let's set the record straight: "Websites" are soooooo 1999. Today's website needs to be an experience: a social experience, a mobile experience, an interactive experience. So when you're thinking about how to create an "awesome website," you really should be thinking about how to create an experience that engages your audience -- and maybe the way to do that is not through a website at all. Here are some tips for creating the best possible interactive experience: Start with strategy To whom are you speaking? Is your market baby boomers? If it is, then you are probably going to want to have some type of physical site, as baby boomers like to dig for information. The site could be a landing page, a content site, or a Flash-driven experience. As long as it contains the information that they're looking for, baby boomers will find it awesome. On the flipside, if you're targeting rising professionals in their 20s and 30s, you might be better off focusing your efforts on social sites like Facebook. There are a number of brands taking time in 2010 to bolster brand experiences on these networks because they've learned that their audience just isn't digging for information. You can create an awesome brand site, but if your audience isn't going to visit it, you're wasting your time. Continuing down in age: If your focus is Generation Y, your consumers are probably spending more time on their mobile devices than in front of a computer. Better have your WAP page or ...Read More »

Want to know how Google is about to change your life? Stop by the Ouagadougou conference room on a Thursday morning. It is here, at the Mountain View, California, headquarters of the world’s most powerful Internet company, that a room filled with three dozen engineers, product managers, and executives figure out how to make their search engine even smarter. This year, Google will introduce 550 or so improvements to its fabled algorithm, and each will be determined at a gathering just like this one. The decisions made at the weekly Search Quality Launch Meeting will wind up affecting the results you get when you use Google’s search engine to look for anything — “Samsung SF-755p printer,” “Ed Hardy MySpace layouts,” or maybe even “capital Burkina Faso,” which just happens to share its name with this conference room. Udi Manber, Google’s head of search since 2006, leads the proceedings. One by one, potential modifications are introduced, along with the results of months of testing in various countries and multiple languages. A screen displays side-by-side results of sample queries before and after the change. Following one example — a search for “guitar center wah-wah” — Manber cries out, “I did that search!” You might think that after a solid decade of search-market dominance, Google could relax. After all, it holds a commanding 65 percent market share and is still the only company ...Read More »
